Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Harnoncourt, NikolausNikolaus Harnoncourt studied Cello at Vienna and was from 1952 until 1969 member of Wiener Symphoniker. 1953 he founded with his wife Alice the orchestra Concentus Musicus Wien to create a forum for his work on historical instruments and the historical performing tradition for the music of the periods renaissance and baroque. Since his debut as a conductor at Theater an der Wien in 1971 with Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria he conducts at Opera Houses such as the ones in Milan, Vienna, Zurich, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. He compiled a wide repertoire with orchestras such as Concertgebouw-Orkest Amsterdam, Chamber Orchestra of Europe as well as Wiener and Berliner Philharmonikern. This repertoire reaches from Haydn until Berg. Appearing as a conductor of the Neujahrskonzerte of Wiener Philharmoniker 2001 and 2003 he could reach millions of enthusiastic spectators.
Am Theater an der Wien he conducted at last for example Haydn’s Orlando paladino and Il Mondo della luna as well as Strawinski’s The Rake’s Progress.
