Dream and Obsession – an analytical reflection and interpretation of the operas of the 2009/10 season with Georg Titscher
Lecture with musical extracts in cooperation with the Erwin Ringel Institute.
This season’s operas span a period of almost 400 years, from Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea to the premiere of The Possessed. At first glance these are widely differing works; but closer inspection shows that they have themes in common that are still relevant today. In life, as in several of this season’s operas, dreams reveal something about unconscious tendencies and urges that govern a person’s behaviour and can develop into an obsession. The lecture will analyse psychological relationships and draw parallels with modern life with the aid of audio-visual examples.
