The baritone studied amongst others with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Rudolf Piernay. On the stages of Operahouses as well as at concert halls he works international with the leading orchestras under conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Pierre Boulez, Charles Mackerras, John Eliot Gardiner, Neville Marriner, Riccardo Chailly, Fabio Luisi, Michael Gielen, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Zubin Mehta, Myung-Whun Chung, Donald Runnicles and Christoph von Dohnányi. Since 1998 he is member of the ensemble at Staatsoper Berlin, where he sings the leading parts of his voice. He made guest appearances at the state opera at Vienna, Hamburg, Munich as well as San Francisco, Paris, Madrid, Sevilla and the festivals in Schwarzenberg, Edinburgh, Tanglewood, Salzburg, Luzern and Granada. Recordings with him are available at the labels EMI, DG, Teldec, harmonia mundi france, Decca, Hyperion and Naxos. At Theater an der Wien he sang at last in Bachs Weihnachts-Oratorium.
