Steffen Aarfing was born in Copenhagen and studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and designed his first set in 1980. Since then he has created many sets for theatre, opera as well as for film and theatrical architecture and works very often together with his wife Marie í Dali. With Kasper Holten he drafted amongst others Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Verdi’s La traviata at Stockholm, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore at Reykjavik, Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, Rihm's Jakob Lenz at Copenhagen, Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre at San Francisco Opera, Lohengrin at Copenhagen and at Moscow as well as for the film JUAN. In 2005 he created the stage with Johannes Schaaf for Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at Mannheim, in 2007 Verdi’s Don Carlo, in 2008 with Stig Andersen for Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and in 2008 Gounod's Faust at Danish National Opera. At Theater an der Wien he has already worked at productions such as Menotti’s Goya and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.
