After an education in arts/photography in Graz (Austria) Bernd Purkrabek started lighting film, before he studied Light design at Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. During his studies he was assistant light designer of Reinhard Traub and worked for internationally renowned companies. Since 2004 he works as a free-lance light designer. He has created the light design for both Opera and Theatre. His creations could been seen on various Theatres Opera Houses and Festivals, for example Wiener Festwochen, De Nederlandse Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Teatro Real and Opéra National du Rhin. At Theater an der Wien he at last created the light for Christof Loy’s production of Henze’s Der Prinz von Homburg in 2009.
