Yan Tax
Costume designer
Born in Holland, Yan Tax studied fashion design at the Academy of the Arts in Breda, The Netherlands. After working as a fashion designer for four years, he has been a costume designer for the cinema, television, opera and theatre in Europe, the USA and Australia since the middle of the 1970s.
He quickly made a name for himself on musical stages with MOZART! (Theater an der Wien), ELISABETH (Germany), THE THREE MUSKETEERS, CYRANO, SUNSET BOULEVARD, CISKE DE RAT and ICH WAR NOCH NIEMALS IN NEW YORK in Hamburg.
His work for the opera took him to the foremost opera houses in Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, San Francisco, Sydney, Dresden, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Florence, Berne and Helsinki.
Yan Tax has been responsible for the costumes for more than 50 films, including Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book, Left Luggage, the light-hearted road movie Le Huitième Jour (The Eighth Day) and Daens.
In 1994 he was nominated for the prestigious Tony Award for his work on the Broadway musical CYRANO – THE MUSICAL. In 2008 he received a German Film Award nomination for the costumes he designed for Black Book.
