First impressions of Benamo

We are kicking off 2026 with a rarity and are already hard at work rehearsing Pablo Luna's Benamor. This zarzuela – the Spanish form of operetta – is based on a Persian fairy tale that explores the question of gender identity and, with its many sexual and cultural allusions, is very much in the spirit of the "wild" 1920s.

Director Christof Loy brings this rarely performed work to the stage in Vienna for the first time with an ensemble of experienced zarzuela performers, including the two rising opera stars Marina Monzó as Benamor and Federico Fiorio as Darío. José Miguel Pérez-Sierra conducts the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
