REHEARSALS BEGIN FOR MEDEA AT THE CHAMBER OPERA
Directed by Corinna von Rad and with musical direction by Benjamin Bayl, this musical theatre evening takes a contemporary look at the well-known myth. It is based on texts by Euripides and Franz Grillparzer, among others, as well as music by George Frideric Handel, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and other Baroque composers.
Medea is one of the most condemned female figures of antiquity, but her story is far more complex than the image of a child murderer. It tells of love, betrayal, loss of homeland and how much the narrator's perspective shapes the perception of a character. While Baroque operas often portrayed Medea as a fury, Grillparzer was the first to take a more nuanced approach in the 19th century. Since the 20th century, there has been increasing scrutiny of why her story has been told exclusively from a male perspective for so long.
The production explores what a Medea narrative might look like in 2026, combining historical adaptations with contemporary issues. We are particularly pleased that this production is once again being created in cooperation with the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Felix Pacher, role: Creon) as part of the CAMPUS programme.
The premiere of "Medea" is on 17 March 2026. Further information about the production can be found here.
