In the autumn of 1906, the theatre and cabaret known as the “Hölle” opened in the basement of the Theater an der Wien with the waltz Mephistos Höllenrufe by Johann Strauss. Since 2010, nine historical cabaret programmes and a dance intermezzo have delighted audiences and critics alike. While official Austria wallows and sinks in a frenzy of celebrations marking the foundation of the republic and the annexation by Nazi Germany, Georg Wacks, doggedly supported by his extraordinary ensemble and helped considerably by Newton’s three laws, creates the spaciest anniversary programme the historic cabaret has ever seen: In Schatten der Venus (“In the shadow of Venus”). The unbelievable tenth programme boldly goes way beyond the boundaries of known worlds and myths. The increasingly sparky ensemble switches between yin and yang, iron and copper, Saladin and Schopenhauer, Nikolaos of Myra and Frank Sinatra and guides the beloved audience through space and time into the centre of the universe. Remarkable performances of historical cabaret and variety numbers, moving sea shanties sung in noble costumes, evergreen aristocratic choruses, international female metamorphoses, Japanese dances and literary gems bring the mood of the "Hölle" back to life for two hours while the champagne flows freely and a metaphysical atmosphere reigns to guarantee an evening of galactic glee. The extraordinarily artistic décor by Stefan Fleischhacker and Elena Schreiber has been designed entirely on the theme of the 130th birthday of Giorgio de Chirico. Humorous texts by Adalbert Stifter, Fritz Grünbaum, Joachim Ringelnatz und Walther Mehring guarantee literature and humour of the highest standard. Songs by Marlene Dietrich, Gioachino Rossini, Frank Wedekind and Claude Debussy round the programme off. The cultured Albero Verde ensemble provides the music with their customary flawless playing. In the accompanying anniversary exhibition, “Kabarett am Ende (“The end of cabaret”) 1918 – 1938 – 1968” Marie-Theres Arnbom presents enlightening facts and a new set of long-lost artefacts from past revues. At the heart of the exhibition are the Republic’s years of transition, its social upheavals and how they were dealt with in light entertainment theatres.
