Synopsis

General Belisario returns victorious to Byzantium. Emperor Giustiniano receives him with honour and allows him to do with his prisoners as he wishes. Belisario lets them all go free. One of them, the young Alamiro, has become strangely attached to the general and wants to stay with him. However, honour is not the only thing awaiting Belisario at home: he and his wife Antonina had two children, a son Alessi and a daughter Irene. As a little boy, Alessi disappeared one day, never to be seen again. While her husband was away, Antonina learned something terrible: Belisario himself had arranged for the boy to disappear because in a dream he had seen that his son could one day rise up against Byzantium. However, the servant he had instructed to carry out the deed had not killed the boy; instead he had secretly abandoned him. Antonina wants revenge on her husband and, together with her lover Eutropio, has devised a plot to show the emperor that Belisario is a traitor with the aid of fake letters. The plan succeeds: Giustiniano, having just bestowed the highest honours on Belisario, has the general’s eyes put out and exiles him. Irene, horrified and filled with pity, resolves to be her blind father’s guide from now on and leaves with him. In the mountains they come across foreign troops on their way to attack Byzantium. They are led by Alamiro. Despite Giustiniano’s unjust treatment of him, Belisario still feels solidarity with Byzantium and convinces Alamiro to have no part in the war. An item of jewellery reveals that Alamiro is in fact Belisario’s long-lost son Alessi. The joy that father, son and daughter feel at their reunion is short-lived: Belisario is wounded as the fighting begins. He is brought to the emperor in Byzantium where Antonina, racked with guilt, has confessed her plot to Giustiniano. Appalled, the emperor sentences her to death. Her last wish is to be allowed to ask her husband for forgiveness. The dying Belisario is carried in. Antonina kneels beside him and begs his forgiveness, but Belisario dies before he can say a single word to his wife. The emperor takes Irene and Alessi under his protection.
