Zad Moultaka

Hamed und Sherifa

for young & all aged 8 and above

The story of the mighty King Hamed begins almost like a fairy tale: Bitterly disappointed by the women of this world, he banishes all females from his kingdom. But Princess Sherifa from the neighbouring country is curious and pays the King a visit in the guise of a man, “Sherif”. When King Hamed’s feelings for his new friend suddenly go deeper than friendship, it is not just his own emotional stability that is severely shaken, but every stereotypical attitude as well. A fairy-tale-like story of gender assignment, clichéd conceptions of roles and diversity that prompts young & all to question much of what they think and uses humour to stimulate discussion. With this work, the Lebanese composer Zad Moultaka creates a symbiosis of Western classical music and traditional sounds from his homeland and shows us, not only through his music, how different cultures can successfully interact.
