# masterclass

Our CAMPUS also offers the opportunity to learn from the masters of their disciplines: during every season we offer masterclasses in which prospective performers are coached and challenged in a huge variety of disciplines. Because our masterclasses are open to the public, you can come along and look over everyone’s shoulders as they work.

PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE Masterclass #1

with Philip Venables

with instrumental students from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz

In recent years, the British-German composer Philip Venables has emerged as one of the most exciting composers of his generation, thanks chiefly to his outstanding operatic and theatrical works. He will work on passages from his remarkable opera Denis & Katya with students from the KUG and the two singers who perform it. The focus is on unconventional playing techniques and crossing more than just musical boundaries.

PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE Masterclass #2

with Nikolaus Habjan

with voice students from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna

His opera productions are characterised by inventiveness, precise characterisation and a wealth of ideas – with puppets almost always playing a crucial role. In recent years, Nikolaus Habjan has achieved great success as a director and virtuoso whistler and regularly returns to the MusikTheater an der Wien. He now introduces voice students to his world of puppets for a day.

PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE Masterclass #3

with Stefan Herheim

with voice students from the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna

MusikTheater an der Wien’s artistic director Stefan Herheim is not only a globally in-demand theatre director, but has also held a professorship at Oslo National Academy of the Arts for several years where he passes on his enthusiasm and his craft to trainee singers. This season he will be demonstrating his signature directing techniques with voice students from the MUK.

“The masterclass opened up new horizons for me: I want to exploit my potential to the full and have fun in the process. Be brave. Try things out. Fall over, laugh, reach goals I never even knew I had.”

Cinzia Zanovello

voice student at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK), participant in the masterclass with Aleksey Igudesman
