Flavio

Georg Friedrich Händel

DRAMMA PER MUSICA IN THREE ACTS

Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym

Is this a courtly drama or a parody of one? In his opera Flavio, George Frideric Handel tells a story of love, jealousy, ambition and wounded pride at the court of the King of the Lombards in the 9th century. But the heroes of this opera, written in 1723, do not always behave heroically, instead becoming caught up in romantic entanglements and pointless duels. Flavio is almost a comedy that makes fun of the plots in opera seria, the genre that was bringing Handel his greatest successes in London at that time. Composed for the greatest singers of their era, this entertaining opera now comes to the MusikTheater an der Wien with some of the greatest Handel singers of our day.
