AMAHL UND DIE NÄCHTLICHEN BESUCHER
From 15 December, Gian Carlo Menotti's opera Amahl und die nächtlichen Besucher, a touching Christmas story about the boy Amahl, will kick off the new series of family operas at MusikTheater an der Wien.
With a very accessible, melodious and sonorous music, dances and choral movements, a first introduction to the genre of opera is made easy. Stefan Herheim's production carefully relocates the piece to a modern time and allows the protagonist Amahl to rise from his not easy reality into a fantasy world in which he becomes a hero.
An impoverished street singer becomes the pawn of political intrigue in a corrupt regime: Nikolaus Habjan directs Jacques Offenbach's Opéra-bouffe La Périchole at the MusikTheater an der Wien and interprets the operetta as social criticism.
A long-time audience favourite as a director and puppeteer who comments astutely on political conditions, Nikolaus Habjan brings the Opéra-bouffe to new life with opera singers, singing actors and dancing puppets.
