NEW: THE FAMILY OPERA
Director Stefan Herheim declares family opera a top priority: he directs the one-hour opera Amahl und die nächtlichen Besucher himself.
A touching Christmas story about the boy Amahl, his family and friends. At the center of the family opera are stories that are familiar to all, and in which humor is not neglected.
An impoverished street singer becomes the pawn of political intrigue in a corrupt regime: Nikolaus Habjan directs Jacques Offenbach's Opéra-bouffe La Périchole at the MusikTheater an der Wien and interprets the operetta as social criticism.
A long-time audience favourite as a director and puppeteer who comments astutely on political conditions, Nikolaus Habjan brings the Opéra-bouffe to new life with opera singers, singing actors and dancing puppets.
