Throwback: Candide

Students in search of the best of all possible worlds!

Workshop at the ORF - RadioKulturhaus in cooperation with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra

Candide is not the only one in search of the best of all possible worlds - around 200 students from secondary schools in Vienna, Burgenland and Lower Austria have also set out on this quest.

On 15 January, the classes attended the dress rehearsal together and experienced Bernstein's Candide in a production by director Lydia Steier before the premiere.

The production, which is peppered with parodic humour and has already been awarded the Operetta Frog by BR-Klassik, was met with enthusiasm and amazement by the pupils.

Before the performance, workshops were held with the play's dramaturge, musicians from the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and cultural mediators.  Questions such as: Who was Leonard Bernstein actually? What does Candide have to do with the philosopher Voltaire? What do the most famous works of comic operetta sound like and what do they mean? And of course: What is the American operetta Candide actually about?

But the pupils also got creative themselves and developed tik toks and short scenes for their own production of the journey from Westphalia via Buenos Aires to Venice.

See for yourself!
